Any landscape needs to incorporate a variety of plants for year-round appeal.  Land Designs Unlimited typically recommends hardy, multi-season plants that are low-maintenance and slow-growing.  Our goal is to give you a landscape you can enjoy without spending excessive time maintaining it.

Some of our favorites:  (Click on the thumbnail for a full-size image)
Japanese StewartiaStewartia pseudocamellia – A small to medium tree that always looks great. White, camellia-like flowers put on a show in July while the exfoliating bark adds winter interest.

Dwarf Fountain Grass - Pennisetum alopecuroides - This grass grows 3' to 3 1/2' tall.  It is absolutely gorgeous in the Fall and complements Autumn Joy Sedum very nicely.

Purple ConeflowerEchinacea purpurea – Purple coneflower dutifully graces the summer landscape with its flowers. Coneflower tolerates slight shade but does not tolerate moist conditions. The cultivar ‘White Swan’ has white flowers while ‘Ruby Giant’ has 7” wide flower heads

Dwarf FothergillaFothergilla gardenii – One of our favorite plants. At only 3-4’ tall, it will not overgrow its boundaries. Bottle brush white flower in the spring changes to gorgeous multicolored fall foliage combining orange, red and yellow hues. Thrives in both the sun and shade.

Gold Mop Chamaecyparis Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Filifera Aurea’ – This specimen plant retains its deep golden hue through the year and tops out around six feet.   Combines well with ‘Bagatelle’ Barberry and ‘Blue Rug’ Juniper.

Japanese Umbrella Pine Sciadopitys verticillata – Shiny thick green needles give this tree the appearance of being made of plastic.  Umbrella Pines are slow growing and maintain their glossy green color through the winter.  A great specimen tree.

Mountain Fire Andromeda Pieris japonica ‘Mountain Fire’ – An early flowering shrub covered with bell shaped white flowers followed by red tinged new growth.  Remains evergreen through the winter.

Maiden GrassMiscanthus sinensis – There are many cultivars of Maiden Grass and they are all gorgeous.  Some of our favorites include ‘Adagio’, ‘Gracillimus’, ‘Morning Light’, and ‘Strictus’.  Each variety we use has its own distinct characteristics.

Oakleaf HydrangeaHydrangea Quercifolia – Excellent shrub for shady areas provides multi-season interest.  The exfoliating bark displayed throughout the winter is followed by oak shaped leaves.  Large white blooms borne in midsummer persist into the winter, climaxing into a deep burgundy fall color.

Red Lace Leaf Japanese Maple Acer palmatum var. dissectum – Japanese Maples add a touch of class to any garden.  Covered with finely divided red leaves through the growing season and providing an arched branch structure throughout the winter.

VincaVinca Minor – This is a more visible flower with finer foliage that blooms heavily in the spring and sporadically throughout the summer.  A great ground cover alternative to overused Pachysandra that thrives in either full sun or shade.

Globe Blue SprucePiecea pungens ‘Globulosa’ – This slow growing conifer retains its bluish cast all year. There are many forms of the blue spruce including Hoopsii, Glauca Pendula, and Glauca Prostrata.

Girards Rainbow Drooping LeucothoeLeucothoe fontanesiana ‘Girard’s Rainbow’ – A great highlight for a shady spot in your yard, Drooping Leucothoe prefers partial to full shade.  New growth has a kaleidoscope of colors including white, red, and copper. The plant takes on a burgundy to purplish hue in the fall.

Nikko Slender DeutziaDeutzia gracilis ‘Nikko’ – This compact plant is covered with white flowers in June. It has a mounding habit and is often planted in groupings or in the perennial border.

Moonbeam CoreopsisCoreopsis verticillata ‘Moonbeam’ – A superb highlight in the summer landscape. The cultivar Zagreb has a deep yellow flower and more compact habit. If your coreopsis look a little tired in late summer, give them a haircut by cutting back the top third of the plant. In a few weeks your plants will be full of flowers.

Snow Fountain Weeping CherryPrunus x ‘Snow Fountain’ – White flowers cover this weeping tree in the April. Guaranteed to stop traffic! A slightly smaller tree than the pink Weeping Higan Cherry.

ShadblowAmelanchier spp. – A native tree with light grey bark that bears white flowers early in the spring. This multi-stemmed small tree is exceptional for use as a specimen or naturalizing woodlands.
