No One Wants an Adequate Landscape

How often do people call and say, “John, I want you to design an adequate landscape for me.  It doesn’t matter the plants or materials you use.  Make it look adequate.”

The short answer.  Never.

When I meet clients I meet people who want to make their home more beautiful.

Clients want interest in all seasons. Clients want low maintenance. Clients want a functional landscape.

People want the best!

Never in my life has someone called and said, “I want an adequate landscape.”

You, and your landscape, deserve more.

Never settle.

How often do you hear, “I want a no maintenance landscape” ? And then there are landscapers that tell their prospective clients that they can install a ‘no maintenance’ landscape for them. And that may be true for the first or second year, but then after 5,6, or 10 years people find me and that is when my fun begins. No matter what I do it will look better than when I started. With knee pads on and my Felco pruner it becomes weed free, and the shrubs are smaller but natural, fabric is cut away from the plantings and rock (ugh) is pulled away to give the plants room to breath and grow. And they find out there is no such thing as a maintenance free landscape, and I have a new client.

Wow Kay, you hit the nail on the head there. The planting phase is the ‘easy’ part, it’s the maintenance that shows what you’ve got. I have yet to find a way to convey the way we maintain landscapes is different, dare I say better than companies with hedge trimmers and a vat of weed killer.

Just saw your comment. My clients can see the difference, as I am sure yours can if they have eyes. I am lucky to have the clients that never complain about the bill, and tell me I can’t retire until they don’t need me anymore, which is probably when they move into ‘the home’.

Once I work for someone they can see the difference!

I have no doubt about that, wish we lived closer!
